Give Them Support

Standing in front of a camera is not always a comfortable place to be. Nothing feels more naked than standing in the middle of a cyc or seamless. If you’re shooting on seamless and you find that you’re hitting a creative wall, consider using a solid one. You can make your subjects feel a bit more relaxed if you give them some support—like a wall to lean on.

A wall allows your subjects many more options in the ways they can pose, lean, and interact with that flat hard surface. Whether they lean in like Jonathan Brandis or put a foot up like Kelly Wearstler, always remember to have them lean forward, not back! They will look thinner with their chin out toward the camera and their butt back.

Cyc (cyclorama): A hard studio wall with a curve at the bottom, top, or sides. Curve in one direction results in a 90-degree cyc; curve the bottom, top, and sides for a 360-degree cyc.
